AVOIDING THE DRIFT, a Safety Fest TN Special Class

Avoiding the Drift

Join Joe Estey from Advanced Technologies and Laboratories, Inc. in his session “Avoiding the Drift: Staying on Course in a Sea of Change”. This class will be held on Tuesday, September 9, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Organizational habits are created formally and informally, intentionally and unintentionally. The habitual practices and actions people are held accountable for, unfortunately are often defined after an incident rather than before it, with many managers using slogans and warnings as substitutes for a well-defined safety conscious process. Safety culture habits are skills, not natural traits. They must be learned, practiced, continuously improved and reinforced. During this interactive, highly participatory session, attendees will discover and discuss:

Specific communication skills and worker involvement techniques two high hazard companies use to predict, prevent and reduce errors and mistakes in their work management process and at the job site, (resulting in zero Lost Work Days in 21 Years and Zero OSHA Recordable Injuries in 14 years); questioning strategies that increase worker investment and reduce the creation of a chilled work environment; four cognitive phases affecting all individuals experiencing ‘change beyond their control’ and the specific accelerated learning and transition techniques necessary to sustain a productive Safety Culture; traps, triggers and tripwires: identifying the key factors that lead to an erosion of practice (practical drift) and steps to reduce them.

Safety Fest TN is a week of safety classes, safety seminars , a Safety Expo, and a community Safety Forum – all free of charge to anyone who registers. A complete schedule can be found at www.safetyfesttn.org. Registration is open, limited exhibition spaces and sponsorships are available.
