The Class
This special session will present a review of the workplace fatalities investigated by TOSHA in 2018. Fatalities have devastating impacts on the lives of the families, friends and co-workers involved. They are uniquely singular events, in that, the results are permanent. The session explores the findings of each investigation and include discussion of the causes and the preventative measures that could or should have been implemented. It is presented to give managers, supervisors, individuals and organizations an opportunity to learn from these tragedies and, most importantly, to take pertinent and practical actions to prevent them in their workplaces.
The Instructor
Steve Hawkins has spent more than 30 years keeping Tennessee workers safe while on the job. Appointed Assistant Commissioner in 2012, Hawkins manages the day-to-day operations of Tennessee OSHA (TOSHA). Promoting workplace safety and health across Tennessee, he leads the team that educates employer groups and labor organizations about safety and health regulations, performs compliance inspections, and consults with employers to develop better methods for controlling and eliminating workplace hazards.
Hawkins has been with the Department of Labor & Workforce Development since 1986, beginning his career as an occupational safety specialist and subsequently serving as an area office safety supervisor, safety compliance manager, and as the assistant administrator of the program.
A four term member of the Federal OSHA Advisory Committee for Construction Safety, Hawkins also serves on the Manufacturing and Engineering Technology Advisory board at his alma mater, Tennessee Technological University.
Hawkins plays a key role in several safety organizations in the state, including the Tennessee Blasting Advisory Council, the Tennessee Associated Builders & Contractors Safety Advisory Committee, the Associated General Contractors Safety Committee, and the Tennessee Road Builders Association Safety Committee. He is also the co-chair of the annual Tennessee Safety and Health Congress and a board member of the Occupational Safety and Health State Plan Association.
Hawkins also serves as the department liaison to the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and is a member of the Tennessee Emergency Response Commission.
Safety Fest TN
Safety Fest TN provides a week of free safety and health training annually in Oak Ridge, and Knoxville, Tennessee, and is dedicated to the mission of making the region the safest place to work and live in the United States. The classes, demonstrations, and sessions are free to all who register to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn safety and health skills.
The event will be held April 29 – May 3, 2019 at multiple locations in Oak Ridge and Knoxville, Tennessee. It is the combined efforts small and large businesses; local, state, and federal agencies; colleges and universities; and non-profit organizations.

Last year’s event included 110 free safety classes, sessions, and demonstrations. The 125 instructors and presenters were graciously provided by 105 organizations, just like yours, giving back to the community.
