World Class Safety! A Featured Session at Safety Fest TN!

Safety Fest TN is a week of FREE training to promote safety and health at work, at home and in the community! Look at the bottom of this post for more Safety Fest TN information.

The Session: World Class Safety

During this two hour session, four separate Volunteer STAR VPP sites will review best practices that have been implemented at their facilities. This year’s session will feature representatives from DENSO, EnergySolutions, Manufacturing Sciences Corporation and Performance Pipe. TN Volunteer STAR VPP program recognizes the best of the best in the area of safety and health programming and performance. On average the Tennessee Volunteer STAR sites experience three-year Total Case Incident Rates (TCIR) 69.4% below their industry average and three-year Days Away, Restricted or Transferred Case Rates (DART) 72.1% below their industry average.

The Instructors

DENSO

Mr. Bryant is the manager for Safety, Health, and Environment at DENSO in Athens Tennessee., and he also serves as a technical support in the area of Safety for DENSO’s North American Operations. He joined DENSO in the fall of 1997 after working in the chemical industry. Mr. Bryant has an Occupational Safety and Health degree from Murray State University and he is a Certified Safety Professional.

EnergySolutions

Mr. Fleetwood is a certified safety professional with EnergySolutions and a graduate of East Tennessee State University. Previously, Joe worked with a local safety and health consulting firm in Knoxville, TN where he gained a wide variety of experience in many manufacturing, heavy industry, and power industries before coming to EnergySolutions Bear Creek Operations. Being a Knoxville native, Joe enjoys many of the great outdoor activities in our area including hiking, hunting, backpacking, shooting, and spending time with his family.

Manufacturing Sciences Corporation

Mr. Chaney is currently the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) compliance site representative for the TOSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) site Manufacturing Sciences Corporation. He has been involved in building nuclear ships, decontamination projects and depleted uranium manufacturing. His favorite quote, “compliance is a journey,” comes from his previous supervisors.

Performance Pipe

Ms. Gierth has been employed with Performance Pipe for 26 years, 16 years as the EHS Representative. She also is a SGE and VPP Mentor to other manufacturing facilities. Performance Pipe first received their VPP Certification in 2005 and has received the Tennessee Governor’s Award for Safety Excellence 10 times.

The Moderator

Tennessee OSHA (TOSHA)

Mr. Blessman has worked for TOSHA for 17 years serving in the positions of Industrial Hygienist, Health Consultant, Occupational Safety Specialist, Safety Supervisor and most recently as VPP Manager. He has also worked in private industry as a Safety Specialist for an Automotive Parts Manufacturer and as an Industrial Hygienist for the PACE and USW International Unions.

Safety Fest TN

Safety Fest TN will be held September 12 – 16 at multiple locations in Oak Ridge and Knoxville, TN. Class schedule and registration have launched. Over 80 classes, sessions and demonstrations are planned for this year. All training is free and open to everyone who registers!

Registration is required. Many classes will fill-up!

Safety Fest TN, which started in 2012, provides free training to promote safety and health at work, at home and in the community. And what a community it is! Last year’s event had over 850 people registered from 79 cities in 6 states, representing 172 organizations. It included 66 free safety classes, seminars and demonstrations. The 51 Instructors were graciously provided by organizations giving back to the community.

This year’s event is going to be bigger and better. Your organization can partner, sponsor or provide resources to promote safety and health too!
