The Class: Applied Ergonomics for Plant Design

This course is intended for health and safety professionals seeking a basic understanding of ergonomics as it applies to the design of manufacturing facilities. The fundamentals of ergonomics design for people at work will be briefly reviewed and resources provided for those seeking more detailed information. Ergonomic design criteria for engineers, architects, and designers will be discussed. Participants will be provided with resources to aid in the ergonomic analysis of engineering designs. Widely available ergonomics analysis tools will be compared and contrasted. Examples of how to apply analytical tools will be provided. Common issues related to ergonomic design will be identified and discussed.

The instructor!

Dr. Jeff Miller is a Senior Scientist in the ORAU Health, Energy and Environment Program. He has a PhD in Health Behavior from the University of Tennessee, an MSPH in Public Health from the University of Colorado and a BS in Health Sciences from Western Illinois University. He is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and has more than 35 years of public health, industrial hygiene, and management experience in the government and private sectors. He is a Director for the American Board of Industrial Hygiene. He is a subject matter expert in safety culture, occupational exposure assessment, and chronic beryllium disease worker protection programs. He serves as an ergonomics specialist for the Uranium Processing Facility project in Oak Ridge, TN.

Safety Fest TN

Safety Fest TN will be held September 12 – 16 at multiple locations in Oak Ridge and Knoxville, TN. Class schedule and registration have launched. Over 80 classes, sessions and demonstrations are planned for this year. All training is free and open to everyone who registers!

Safety Fest TN, which started in 2012, provides free training to promote safety and health at work, at home and in the community. And what a community it is! Last year’s event had over 850 people registered from 79 cities in 6 states, representing 172 organizations. It included 66 free safety classes, seminars and demonstrations. The 51 Instructors were graciously provided by organizations giving back to the community.

This year’s event is going to be bigger and better. Your organization can partner, sponsor or provide resources to promote safety and health too!
